Hal C Darst, CADC II, Director/Therapist

Respect and sensitivity are the cornerstones of counseling at Cascade Pathways.  Each individual is different, with unique needs and issues.  Cascade Pathways has a focus on wellness: where an individual is able to experience a balance and  harmony – within one’s inner emotional being; in relationships with others; and with experiencing a sense of meaningful existence within our culture and environment.

Sometimes depression, anxiety or other mental health issues can lead to substance abuse, and often alcohol or drug use will lead to depression and /or anxiety.  Cascade Pathways will address these issues where appropriate, or provide appropriate referrals when needed.  Therapy may include developing skills in relaxation  training and meditation for those clients who recognize the powerful benefit these approaches offer.

Often drug and alcohol abuse leads to relational conflicts, family turmoil and broken relationships.  Being able to honestly address these  issues is generally a necessary part of any recovery process.   If it is the client’s desire Cascade Pathways will work with the significant other or family members to assist in the healing process and healthier communication styles.

Developing a support network, enhancing a sense of community is also a component of being able to move away from unhealthy relationships with drugs and alcohol.  Twelve Step programs are very effective in providing this support for individuals that are comfortable with this approach, but for those  who are not comfortable with AA or NA, Cascade Pathways endeavors to provide alternative group therapy experiences.

Groups that have been offered at different times have included: “Overcoming Opiate and Painkiller Addiction”, an ongoing Mens Group, a Women’s Group and Parent Support Groups.

In the future we hope to resume offering an experiential group for adults that will involve wilderness therapy activities such as backpacking, camping, rock-climbing as a means of catalyzing emotional growth in the recovery process.
